Position Title: Media Engagement Strategy Volunteer

SCOTTISH BADGERS is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our group of Advisors to take responsibility for our media engagement strategy across all platforms. The chosen candidate will gain valuable experience in shaping the public perception and appreciation of badgers in Scotland.

SCOTTISH BADGERS is the only charity dedicated to the protection and conservation of Scotland’s badgers, their setts and natural habitats.  Founded twenty years ago, we work with a small contracted staff team backed by teams of committed enthusiastic volunteers, providing advice and protecting badgers, their setts and habitats. Development, crime prevention, forestry and farming are the main areas of our work. We maintain a list of trained volunteers to support directly the work of investigating authorities. And we maintain a secure database of badger incidents and reports – the sole database for Scotland. The charity is run by a board of Trustees supported by Advisors who include experts in badger field work, ecology, the law, training, leadership, and management, and bring a wide range of skills and connections with other environmental and conservation organisations

Background to this position

Badgers have been persecuted since before recorded history and are still subjected to myths about their behaviour, and to scapegoating for problems not of their doing which motivate some people to persist in harming badgers and flouting the law.

We are convinced that the provision of accurate information and knowledge about badger life is key to dispelling the myths, spreading the appreciation of badgers and reaching more effective solutions to perceived ‘problems’.

What you will gain

Volunteering with SCOTTISH BADGERS is a fantastic opportunity to make a positive contribution to the protection of badgers in Scotland through applying your skills in the dissemination of knowledge through social media, newspapers and all forms of reporting.

Subject to an initial trial period, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the charity’s Advisory Group, from where members may, though need not, become charity trustees.

Tasks will include:

Uploading photos, videos, relevant journals and articles with added comment or insight on all forms of social media

Writing and placing articles on behalf of SCOTTISH BADGERS with newspapers and magazines for publication.

Contributing to the charity’s website with photos, videos, articles and upcoming events.

Producing monthly progress reports to the board of Trustees.

We are looking for a volunteer with the following skills:

Self-motivation and a pro-active attitude with a love of nature, ideally with experience of writing articles, blogging or journalism

Good knowledge of Scotland and interest in the biology and ecology of badgers.

In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and how each can be effectively utilised.

IT skills, including all Microsoft Office packages and Wordpress.

Excellent writing and language skills

Confidence to work by yourself and as part of the SCOTTISH BADGERS management team.
